Spectroscopy on Thick HgI2 Detectors: A Comparison Between Planar and Pixelated Electrodes
نویسنده
چکیده
Thick mercuric iodide (HgI 2 ) detectors are investigated as potential room temperature gamma-ray spectrometers. By using pixelated anodes the induced charge on the electrode is dependent mainly on electron movement and is almost independent of the depth of interaction. Moreover, by reading out the planar cathode signal simultaneously, the depth of interaction can be determined and any effects of electron charge loss can be corrected. By combining these two methods (pixelated anodes and depth sensing), the resolution from 1 cm thick HgI 2 devices can be improved to 1.4% FWHM when using a Cs-137 point source. These results were obtained using a modest electric field (2500 V/cm) and relatively short shaping times (4–16 s) for HgI 2 . A comparison between conventional planar readout and single polarity charge sensing techniques with wide band-gap semiconductors is discussed.

Comparison of 5 and 10mm thick HgI2 pixelated g-ray spectrometers
HgI2 detectors fabricated with pixelated anodes were tested as potential room temperature spectrometers. Spectra were obtained with 5 and 10mm thick devices, and their results were compared. The 5mm thick devices showed some effect of the anode weighting potential, while the 10mm thick devices showed the effects of charge diffusion/sharing and electron trapping. A resolution near 1.4% FWHM usin...
متن کاملElectron Trapping Variations in Single-Crystal Pixelated HgI2 Gamma-Ray Spectrometers
The characteristics of thick ( 6 mm) HgI 2 room-temperature gamma-ray detectors having 4 small pixel anodes are investigated. Spectra for the different anodes (overall and for individual interaction depths) are presented. The mu–tau product for electrons was measured to study the variations of electron transport within a single HgI 2 crystal. By using the single polarity charge sensing with dep...
متن کاملSystematic investigation of the signal properties of polycrystalline HgI2 detectors under mammographic, radiographic, fluoroscopic and radiotherapy irradiation conditions.
The signal properties of polycrystalline mercuric iodide (HgI2) film detectors, under irradiation conditions relevant to mammographic, radiographic, fluoroscopic and radiotherapy x-ray imaging, are reported. Each film detector consists of an approximately 230 to approximately 460 microm thick layer of HgI2 (fabricated through physical vapour deposition or a screen-print process) and a thin barr...
متن کاملEvaluation of Pixelated NaI(Tl) Detectors for PET
A new detector design using pixelated NaI(Tl) crystals has been evaluated for use in positron emission tomography (PET). This detector uses 4 4 30 mm NaI(Tl) pixels coupled via a lightguide (1.4 cm thick) to an array of 39 mm diameter photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) in an Anger detector design. Our measurements show that the high light output of NaI(Tl) leads to a good discrimination of the 4 mm N...
متن کاملEstimate interaction timing in a large volume HgI2 detector using cathode pulse waveforms.
This paper presents experimental results on the timing resolution achieved with a 5 mm thick HgI2 detector. The timing information was derived based on the cathode pre-amplifier pulse waveform, measured using a digital oscilloscope. The times of interaction were estimated by fitting the measured pulse waveforms to pre-defined waveform models. With this approach, problems related to the conventi...
